Moodle Gets A Second Life

Moodle Gets A Second Life

Second Life is regarded by many to be a game with, well, ' no game.'  Now, thanks to the developers at sloodle.org , that's no longer the case. Sloodle, a term coined by the convergence of Second Life and Moodle, is a module that can be easily installed on Moodle.

A Sim of One's Own?

A Sim of One's Own?

Some educators have been discouraged from using virtual worlds due to cost, content restrictions, and concerns about protecting their students from the sometime unsavory nature of these places. What if all of those worries just disappeared?

Brave New Site

Moodle Gets Some Style

callsig site

The new callsig.org website uses ProMoodle components and modules to combine Joomla and Moodle .

The result is a sleeker, easier interface housing the reliable LMS support of Moodle. Best of all, when you login to Joomla, you also login to Moodle. Joomla content is easily created, updated and shared. The Moodle side continues to handle the number-crunching, organization and administration needed for education. Best of all, Moodle fits in a wrapper, so it blends in with the stylish Joomla environment. It's win-win!

Speaking Journals

Speaking Tasks Go Online

Audio RecorderMany educators look askance at online learning for language education because they think speaking tasks are left out of the mix. Not so, we say!

The 3rd party Audio Recorder Module for Moodle can be used to create Speaking Journals. The module itself is simple enough to install, and configuring it for use as a Speaking Journal is also pretty straight forward. We'll tell you how to do it in an upcoming tutorial!

Quick Hacks

What's In A Word?

I needed to change the awkward 'surname,' which my students don't usually know, to 'family name.' I did this by  1.editing the moodle>lang>moodle.php file; 2. searching for 'Surname'; 3. Changing it to 'Family name'; 4. On the site, the form reflected the change.Image

Multimedia Feedback

Rich Rewards

The comments entry area of assignments will accept html. Why not give your students some multimedia feedback by adding an mp3 recording of your comments or, better yet, a webcam capture? It's easier than you think, and students will respond to the personal attention. Image

Forum Trickery

Switch It Off

If you need to temporarily turn of posts to a forum, you can  change the type in the database table from general to news. This removes the 'Add a new discussion button.'  Image
